On the night of 14th May Piotr Krajewski, the artistic director of WRO announced the awards of the 14th Media Art Biennale WRO 2011: Alternative Now.
In consistence with the motto Alternative Now we have also decided to be alternative in relation to our own tradition, and for the first time ever we have not selected a jury. With due respect to the WRO history, in consistence with its present being and caring for its future – we have decided to bestow three ex aequo awards of PLN 10,000 each. The awards go to:
Megan Daalder, USA, for her Mirrorbox installation
David Bowen, USA, for his tele-present-water installation
incite/ [Kera Nagel and André Aspelmeier], DE, for their Dualicities and Beyond performance
For the first time in the history of the WRO Biennale, a special Award of Critics and Editors of Art Magazines has been given. Grzegorz Borkowski (Obieg, Poland), Stefano Mazzoni (Artribune, Italy), Kamila Pakuło (Arteon, Poland) have decided that this year the award of PLN 5,000 goes to Igor Krenz for his exhibition Mathematical Morphology in Teledetection.
The Programming Team is close to complete the selection for the WRO 2011 Alternative Now Biennale program.
The list of chosen works will be published on the March 13th, 2011.
Over 2000 works from all over the world have been submitted to the WRO 2011 Biennale Alternative Now, and we would like to thank all the entrants. The WRO Biennale’s artistic director and programming team are in the process of viewing the submissions, and we’ll post their decision about the works chosen for screenings and exhibitions during the Biennale shortly after February 20th
The WRO 2011 program will include an international conference whose participants will include Prof. Lev Manovich, Dr Edward A. Shanken and Prof. Erkki Huhtamo.
Among other special events, WRO 2011: Alternative Now will feature a presentation by the radically independent and eccentric Istvan Kantor: performance artist, video artist, creator of installations, industrial and electropop music, cofounder of the world Neoism movement.
